John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is a short drive from Upper Darby, pocketed away in a very urban area next to the airport, rail lines and highways, this bird sanctuary and wetlands area has an easy walking path for just under 5 miles around a lake. When we visited on this temperate Fall day a storm was moving in and the dramatic clouds burst forth in lightning and thunder just as we left. An enormous downpour followed, but we were home dry and safe as we opened a bottle of Syrah to celebrate this excellent adventure.

I saw my first blue heron at Tinicum years ago. What a treat for a city boy.
